THE FACTS: Smooth. Temperamental. May cause electric shock. Will steal your heart when you’re not looking. Once got an award for Loudest Turk. Forever employed at ShinRa Co. Somewhat of an alcoholic. Item most likely to wish for: cigarettes. Most likely will be seen naked several times by everyone in the Room.

LIKES: Alcohol. Sex. Hips. Breasts. Long hair. Pretty faces. Smoking. Being obnoxious and cynical. Laughing too loudly. Bemoaning his fate. Thinking about you and him in a cheap hotel with soundproof walls.

DISLIKES: People who are too stupid. Prudes. People who take things too seriously. Empty cigarette packs. Liars. Girls who complain about everything. When there’s over a hundred channels on a television and still nothing good to watch.

SEXUALITY: Reno is very easily pleased when it comes to attraction and sex. He has a vague preferred “type”, but he will often feel attracted to people who are different or even the opposite of his type, so it’s safe to say that he could be attracted to anybody. The only reason Reno might be immediately turned off by someone would be if the person seemed to be very close-minded, judgemental, or too annoying (girls with shrill voices who complain a lot and perpetually point out the flaws in others always make Reno’s shit-list, no matter how big their tits are).

If Reno had to be labeled with a sexuality, he would be bisexual. Truthfully, “everyonesexual” would be more accurate. Even though his sexual attraction isn’t in the least exclusive, however, it would take an extremely good connection with someone and something much more impressive than just good looks to make Reno want to have a relationship with anyone. He has a sort of commitment-phobia and generally avoids actually sleeping with the types of people that might try to trap him in a relationship afterward. However, he is just as capable of falling in love as anyone else and he has had such feelings in the past, and it would not be impossible for him to desire a real, committed relationship with someone here.

APPEARANCE: Reno describes himself as a “tall, skinny bitch” often, and this description is not far from the truth. Although he certainly isn’t the tallest person he knows, his thin frame does make him appear taller than he actually is. He is six feet and two inches tall, weighing 150 pounds. Although he is thin-looking, it is obvious that he is well-muscled, especially around his arms.

Although many theories floating around the offices of the ShinRa Co. claim that it isn’t, his bright red hair is indeed natural. His hair could be best described as a mullet with one section of very long hair that he ties into a ponytail. No matter how much his co-workers beg him to either cut the ponytail off or grow out the rest of his hair, he most likely never will do either. His eyes are usually light blue, although it isn’t unusual for them to look a little green when he gets emotional.

Reno has two identical red tattoos that curve diagonally across either temple. He insists that he got them for a good reason but he has never revealed what they mean to anyone, and everyone suspects that it was the result of an impulsive, drunken night from his earlier days in the Turks. His left ear is pierced, and Reno claims that his tongue used to be pierced before the piercing nearly got ripped out on a mission by an angry, sadistic target and he was forced to remove it.

PERSONALITY: Depending on how well you know him, different aspects of Reno’s personality might be more dominant when talking to him. Those who don’t know him well, but don’t rub him the wrong way, usually notice that he talks loudly and seemingly without fear of saying something he shouldn’t. Those who don’t know him and have the misfortune of making his so-called “shit list” will probably notice how quick to anger he is, and may even find themselves being electrocuted if they push all the wrong buttons often enough. Although he does get rather angry and would probably have a few choice words for anyone he didn’t like, it does take quite a bit more shit-talking to provoke him to actually start a fight himself. He is more accustomed to joining the fight after being struck first unless he was ordered to fight someone; if the fight isn’t part of a job, he usually doesn’t care enough to bother initiating anything.

Of course, those who know Reno well enough to make it past the surface personality he displays know that his psyche runs a lot deeper than many people would think. He can be very quiet and lost in thought when remembering his past, and he will become very depressed if forced to remember something bad, especially if it’s something he’s done. He still carries a great deal of guilt about his previous jobs with him and feels very uneasy around children because they remind him of the people he’s killed the most. Reno also displays a great amount of loyalty to the few people he becomes close to, and can be extremely protective. Although he isn’t known for being a particularly jealous person, he does seem to be a little possessive at times, especially with people that he’s slept with more than once or shown an inclination to develop strong feelings for. Though he doesn’t seem like the type, Reno craves closeness and skin-to-skin contact often, and when he’s alone with someone he will usually reach out to touch them while talking.

Reno has fallen in love before, but he has never been the first to say “I love you,” nor has he said it very often. The phrase is symbolic to him, representing a closeness that he hasn’t honestly felt very much of ever before, not including the bond between his family as a child. Even when he does love someone, he usually chooses to express it through physical connection rather than through verbal communication. He replaces the phrase he can’t say with other words, such as ones expressing a desire for physical closeness, and will show how much he cares for someone through his loyalty and his openness to them instead. When he feels particularly close to someone, he will show it through his physical proximity to them when they are in public, opting to sit beside them or subtly find ways to touch them in front of people to show his connection to them and prove his feelings.

HISTORY:

Childhood: Reno had a mother and father, along with a couple siblings. They lived in a small home in Midgar. During the more turbulent years of Midgar’s past, ShinRa SOLDIERs engaged in a small fight with a group of rebels in the section Reno’s family lived in, and most of the homes were burnt to the ground. The civilians that escaped the burning houses were killed in the crossfire.

Reno, who had been playing with the neighborhood children outside before the fight started, escaped in the confusion of the ambush and hid in the crack between a dumpster and a cement wall. He remained there well into the night, afraid to walk back out into the open in case the rebels were still in the area. Once daylight broke, he went back to his house and found the rest of his family lying among the bodies scattered throughout the town. He left home right afterwards and lived on the streets of Midgar until he was spotted outside the ShinRa headquarters and taken in.

He was nine years old during the fight, and he lived out on the streets until just after his twelfth birthday.

Early years in ShinRa: A young ShinRa office worker spotted Reno on his way to work, sitting on the steps of the large headquarters building. He took him in to an office to ask whether he would be right for a job they had been trying to fill. That day, Reno was assigned to watch over the President of the company’s son. Reno began shadowing the young boy, but he was asked not to been noticed or to ever speak with him. He acted as a distant watchdog for the junior Shinra for the next two years, being allowed to live and sleep in the headquarters as long as he was employed there, until he was finally allowed to meet his charge. He was introduced to the young Rufus Shinra as a new playmate, allowing him to remain closer to him so that he could guard him more easily while the boy was gaining more and more attention from Shinra’s enemies. It wasn’t until Reno was sixteen and Rufus was fifteen that he was revealed to be the boy’s bodyguard, but Rufus never knew that he had been followed by Reno since he was eleven.

Becoming a Turk: When Reno turned seventeen, he was asked to see a man named Tseng about being promoted from a bodyguard to a Turk. It was explained that when Rufus became the next President of ShinRa, the Turks were to be his official bodyguards and Reno would have to already be an active, experienced member by then. He met Tseng and learned that he would have to become efficient at two key skills to be a Turk: espionage and assassination. He began to learn from Tseng about the abilities he would need to improve and took on several easy missions to practice.

His first mission was to find out whether or not a ShinRa advisor’s wife was cheating on him. After successfully completing several missions, each progressively more difficult, he was asked to perform one mission of assassination. He went on a supposedly easy mission with one target that ended up becoming a huge fight between the members of a mafia and a handful of Turks. His partner on that mission was killed, along with many of the mafia members. Reno successfully killed three of the members, earning him instant approval of a position as a Turk. He went home covered in blood and had to be given tranquilizer pills the next day at work to stop his hands from shaking. After several more assassinations, he gained a proficiency in quietly taking out a handful of unsuspecting targets and he stopped showing signs of apprehension about killing. It seemed that his fear had been replaced by a quiet, all-consuming rage, feeling that he was justified in killing because he was fighting against the types of people who had killed his family.

A year after joining the Turks, Reno was given a permanent partner named Rude. They were awkward around each other at first, but soon became good friends and a fearsome team among the Turks.

When Reno was twenty, he found out that it was ShinRa SOLDIERs who had killed his family, and not the rebels he had been blaming his entire life. He continued working as a Turk, and although he didn’t show any signs of caring who was responsible one way or the other during missions, he did lock himself in his room for a couple days after each mission that involved the killing of civilians, refusing to come out or speak to anyone. This self-imposed imprisonment seemed to last longer after missions where Reno was forced to kill women and children.

AVALANCHE: The Turks encountered a particularly difficult-to-handle rebel group called AVALANCHE, led by ex-First Class SOLDIER Cloud Strife, in Midgar. After failing to capture Aerith in the Sector 5 slums, Reno blew up the Sector 7 support pillar and killed the largest amount of innocent civilians he ever has. AVALANCHE engaged in battle with him and he was almost killed. Reno turned 23 right after this incident. Taken out of action temporarily, the Turks hired Elena to replace him in the meantime. After finally recovering from his wounds, he was once again sent out to intercept AVALANCHE in Gongaga. Later, he went with a team to intercept the group in Wutai but became sidetracked when a member was kidnapped by Don Corneo. He temporarily teamed up with Cloud to rescue the member. Shortly after this incident, Reno was ordered to search for Cloud but refused to do it because he was “off duty.”

Jenova’s Remnants: Two years after the last battle with AVALANCHE, Reno is sent on a mission to inspect the Northern Cave with Elena and Tseng. They are attacked by three silver-haired men who claim to be the Remnants of Jenova’s legacy, her “sons”. Elena and Tseng are heavily wounded when they are tortured by the Remnants in the cave, and Reno narrowly escapes the same fate in his helicopter. At the same time, Reno contacts Tifa from AVALANCHE and asks for Cloud to visit the headquarters.

Rufus attempts to persuade Cloud to help them fight the Remnants, claiming that ShinRa is trying to make up for its crimes against the planet. Cloud refuses at first but eventually teams up with the Turks to fight Kadaj, Yazoo and Loz. Reno and Rude fight against Yazoo and Loz in Edge but they are overpowered. Later, they construct ShinRa bombs and attempt to kill Yazoo and Loz in a massive explosion. Afterwards, Reno and Rude escape to return to Rufus’s side.

After the Advent: A few months after the end of the battle against the Remnants, Reno disappears from Midgar and reappears in the Room.
